Hole Kiln Fair

At the Azuchi-Momoyama Pottery Village Pottery Facility, we will hold a Hole Kiln Fair, inviting general participants to make pottery, perform firing in a hole kiln, and observe a kiln firing event. The hole kiln used in the Hole Kiln Pottery Experience is a traditional wood-fired type that takes time and effort to produce pottery; however, it gives the work a natural texture. When you fire your pottery creation in the kiln you can enjoy the Hole Kiln Firing Experience, where you can observe the flames blowing out from the kiln filled with firewood. You can also enjoy the Hole Kiln Experience-type Excursion Tour, which passes by museums, pottery galleries, Oribe Street, shopping streets, etc. Please join us.

What is a hole kiln?

A hole kiln is a kiln into which firewood is fed and in which firing takes place over time.
As it is an analog firing method, beautiful colors and patterns such as scarlet, vidro, natural glaze, and Yohen (firing-denatured colors and shapes) that cannot be produced in modern kilns are created. Through the Hole Kiln Firing Experience, you will learn about the roots of pottery, experience the world of flames until your piece is completed, and learn about the pottery itself. It is a high temperature of 1,200 to 1,300 °C that transforms clay into pottery. As the temperature of the kiln approaches its upper limit, the color of the furnace mouth and the inside of the furnace becomes white and bright. The flame that escapes from the flue becomes a pillar of fire from the chimney, and fire blows out from everywhere in the kiln. The sound of crackling and burning firewood, and the sound of flowing flames. Why don’t you experience pottery being born through hole kiln firing with us? You can get an up-close view of times when the temperature that does not rise as expected, the sweaty staff putting firewood, and the staff silently chopping firewood.
